The survey asked "How would you describe the current state of your business and displays a graph from zero (very pessimistic) to 100 (very optimistic). The results fell at 57%, just tilted toward optimism.
A similar question, "How do you feel about the future of the industry?" fared slightly better, registering an average of 59% optimistic.
The article begins by acknowledging the challenges of the last five years: pandemic, inflation and supply-chain disruptions. Sixty percent of retailers surveyed indicated that consumers are exhibiting increased price sensitivity and reduced spending on discretionary items. "They are more careful with their money, but if they like it, they will buy it," said one survey respondent. "They are all in for the experience you provide for them when they enter - and will spend more because you're giving it to them."
Economic factors, including inflation and rising costs, were seen by 60% of those surveyed as the primary challenge influencing customer spending habits.
While 74% of respondents highlighted the anticipated growth of e-commerce and the need to enhance the digital presence of their stores, they also report that 91% of their sales still come from in-store purchases.
"Customers will continue to seek deals online more than ever and will seek out small business for what the big box cannot provide," another respondent said, "Especialy with regard to customer service."
