Could Impact Retailers: Part Two
Last month in this space we examined the lasting changes brought about by the pandemic in the area of working from home and how it impacts WHERE people shop. This month we will take a look at how the trend toward working from home impacts WHAT people need to buy.

FinancesOnline.com lists "13 Essential Work from Home Trends & Predictions for 2021/2022 You Should Know." The article explores the trend toward working remotely and what people will need to make it work for them. Not all 13 predictions impact the readers of this newsletter, but some of them can inform and help a retailer when thinking about inventory needs for the future.
In 2019, 23.7% of workers in the USA worked remotely. Thanks to the pandemic, as much as 44% now work from home and many will never go back to working every day in an office. This means many people need to enhance a home office space.
Technology
The first thing that comes to mind is technology, because without today's internet, video-conferencing and cellular technology, working from home would be impossible. Your store may not sell computers, webcams or smart phones, but you may be able to sell cases, stands, cables, chargers, mousepads, etc., that support all those devices.
Furnishings
Offices need to be furnished. Furniture retailer Herman Miller, credited with inventing the office cubicle in the 1960s, is now gearing up to meet the needs of home offices (source). Your store may not sell desks and chairs, but you might still be able to offer wall art and desk decor, frames, pencil/pen caddies, throw pillows, etc. What can you sell that would help make a home office more comfortable and livable?
Apparel
It goes without saying that people working from home dress differently from people working in a formal office. Every day can be casual Friday! Your store is probably not Brooks Brothers, but even if your store is a general-gift, souvenir or greeting-card store, you may have a corner featuring casual wear such as T-shirts with local logos or slogans.
Old School
While new tech makes remote work possible, home offices will still need pens and pencils, paper and paper clips and other low-tech supplies. Your store may not sell office supplies, but if you apply some imagination, you might think of things like notebooks, journals, stationery, notecards, business-card and paper-clip holders, etc. That's not to mention coffee cups to fuel working from home! What can your store sell?
