Spending on costumes, candy and decorations for Halloween is expected to be up 10% compared to last year according to a report from the National Retail Federation (NRF) and BIGresearch. The report also
reveals that 40% of adults plan to dress up for Halloween this year, up from 33% in 2009. "In recent years, Halloween has provided a welcome break from reality, allowing many Americans a chance to escape from the stress the economy has put on their family and incomes," said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay (source).
More than 70 percent of those surveyed plan to hand out candy, and about half will decorate their homes or yards. A solid 30.1 percent of consumers said the state of the U.S. economy would affect their plans, generally by spurring them to spend less than they might have. (source).
The forecast includes especially good news for costume retailers. "People are starting to shop early, which is a good thing, instead of waiting until that last week," Costume Holiday House, manager Pam Hickman said. "We've seen a huge jump in our sales." Costume Holiday House likely is seeing an uptick in sales, too, because it moved to a different location.
The survey also found that 33.3 percent of people will throw or attend a party, 72.2 percent will hand out candy, 46.3percent will carve a pumpkin, 20.8 percent will visit a haunted house and 31.7 percent will take their children trick-or-treating. (source).

ELK Lighting has purchased home furnishings vendor Sterling Industries, according to a joint statement released by Elk Lighting CEO Bradford Smith and Sterling Industries CEO and founder John Scott.
"The combination of these two home furnishing industry leaders will deliver the most expansive product offering in North America," Smith said. "This comprehensive strategy positions the company for dynamic cross promotional opportunities and ultimate flexibility that is seldom achievable in the home furnishings arena."
"Our customers will be the ultimate winner from this agreement," Scott said. "Sterling will offer buyers the same great style and selection under the Sterling Industries banner, now coupled with the powerful support of Elk Lighting." Scott, through a consulting arrangement with Elk, will be offering John Scott Designs as a key component of Sterling's future product offerings. Further terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Elk Lighting, headquartered in Nesquehoning, Pa., is a manufacturer and importer of indoor and outdoor residential, designer and commercial lighting fixtures. The company, founded in 1983, distributes over 3,000 products under Elk Lighting, Landmark Lighting, Dimond Lighting and Baldinger Architectural Lighting. The company also carries the licensed brands of Trump Home, Biltmore Estates, and mary-kateandashley. This is Elk Lighting's second acquisition in recent months. In June 2010, Elk acquired Baldinger Lighting, a 117-year-old company in the commercial and hospitality industries.
Sterling Industries, founded in the mid-1990s, specializes in decorative accessories, portable lighting and accent furniture at moderate price points.
